Astro turf is actually a brand name – developed in the 1960s, named after it was famously used at the Houston Astrodome stadium, Texas. The story behind this is rather amusing. The world's first domed indoor sports arena tried everything to cultivate their natural turf, to no avail. By the end of its first season, they had to use green paint to colour in the dead grass. The following year, artificial turf, which was in its infancy, became astro turf and the product grew into a household name.
