The History of Astro Turf

Astro Turf has become a permanent fixture, appearing in both private and commercial properties, that people often forget what the origins of the synthetic grass is. This article takes a look at the history of Astro Turf so you can have a deeper appreciation for this.

The origins of Astro Turf dates back to the 1960s, when a company called Chemstrand was trying to find ways in order to develop artificial flooring for playing fields to minimize injury of the athletes and for easier maintenance. Working on the idea of developing tough carpeting, the company worked with the Ford Foundation in order to develop good urban sports flooring. Eventually, they were able to develop a type of synthetic grass, the first large-scale installation of which was set up at the Moses Brown School in Rhode Island on 1964. The site was chosen because it had minimal grassy lands because of its urban location. This then led to the installation of synthetic grass at the Houston Astrodome in 1964. This is said to be where synthetic grass really took off, and where it officially became known as Astro Turf. The next years saw a wide variety of property owners getting synthetic grass installed in their properties, ranging from homes to sports facilities. Initially, it was so that children and adults could have a safe place to play in, but it quickly became used to add aesthetic appeal to the property.

As the years passed, so too did the Astro Turf manufacturers seek to develop new kinds of technology to make their synthetic grass appear more realistic. The original Astro Turf looked artificial, with its shiny, spiky blades and plastic-like texture. Today’s Astro Turf does not only look and feel like genuine grass, it is also more durable, and it provides more cushioning in order to lessen the chance of injuries.

Astro Turf has gone a long way since it was developed in the 1960s. Even so, the manufacturers have not stopped in coming up with new innovations in order to improve their products. As such, expect to see newer, better artificial grass from the company in the coming years.
