Guide to Laying Artificial Grass on Decking

As specialist suppliers of artificial grass in the UK, we’d be the first to tell you about the myriad of uses for synthetic grass. Although we supply only high-quality artificial grass, it’s worth noting that some synthetic grass products lend themselves better to some projects than others, so when buying artificial grass, it’s important to do some research and choose wisely.

If you’re considering artificial grass patio ideas, or perhaps artificial grass for the balcony, then you’ve come to the right place. Read on as we explore some of the more interesting artificial grass installations that just might be the inspiration you’ve been looking for. We’ll also take you through the steps to follow in order to carry out your own artificial grass fitting on your patio or balcony.

How to install artificial grass on patios and balconies

Fitting artificial grass to hard surfaces like balconies and patios is generally quite straightforward and simple– in fact, laying synthetic grass in this way is actually very similar to fitting carpet, but here’s a rundown of the key things to consider, and steps you should take:

  1. Assess and prepare your surface for artificial grass installation
  2. Clear the area of any dust and debris
  3. Install your artificial grass underlay and level the area
  4. Join your synthetic grass sections using artificial grass joining tape, and spot glue to secure
  5. Secure the grass by spot gluing the perimeter
  6. Enjoy your stunning new artificial grass area in all of its luscious green glory!

Artificial grass for patios and paving

We wouldn’t disagree that a garden patio area can certainly be beautiful in its own right, but perhaps it’s time to bring the area to life in a new way, or maybe you just fancy a change. In that case, synthetic grass could just be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Artificial grass for the balcony

Who said that grass belongs on the ground? One of the many benefits of artificial grass is that it’s easy to install almost anywhere, from your cottage garden, right up to your 10th story terrace balcony (and higher). It’ll even go on the roof if you want it to!

Prepare your surface for artificial grass fitting

Firstly, just like when laying artificial grass on decking, it’s important to check on the quality of the surface you’re planning to use as a subfloor for your artificial grass installation. Make sure to clear any dust and debris as best you can, and check that the area is good for drainage.

Level the area and install your artificial grass underlay

Before fitting artificial grass, it really helps to have an underlay in place as this will result in a much softer grass surface once the installation is complete. A 10mm shock pad should do the job in most cases, but there are thicker varieties if needed. If the patio or paving area is particularly uneven (like many are), it may be worth applying a self-levelling compound to flatten out the surface before installing your artificial grass underlay.

How to lay artificial grass on patio slabs or a balcony

Now that we’re ready for the artificial grass installation, let’s get to work. If you’re pretty handy and have some DIY skills, you can absolutely do this yourself at home, but there’s no shortage of fantastic Namgrass-verified installers that can help you achieve the perfect artificial grass fitting. First, lay out the synthetic, and carefully cut the pieces to size with a stanley knife. We always recommend leaving the grass to settle for an hour or so. Since you’re laying artificial grass on concrete or a similar hard surface, screws aren’t really an option– so spot gluing is the way forward.

Securing your artificial grass

Make sure you’ve done all of your cutting before even touching the artificial grass glue. Once this is done, the next step is to connect the synthetic grass sections using artificial grass joining tape.

Once this is done, secure the perimeter of the artificial grass patio or balcony using your artificial grass glue. We suggest staying off the synthetic grass for a few hours while the adhesive settles and dries. Congratulations– you’re now free to enjoy your beautiful new artificial grass garden area.

That covers it

Are you considering artificial grass for your patio or balcony? As we said earlier, all of our products at Namgrass are high-quality artificial grass options, and most of them would suit a patio or balcony area perfectly. That said, if you expect the area to get a lot of footfall, we’d recommend a shorter pile height grass, such as our Namgrass Aura, or Kirkstall, but if you’d prefer the longer-grass aesthetic, we have plenty of other fantastic artificial grass products available.
